Next to being a product designer, Jule Cats is a lyricist and singer. Emotions are an important motive for writing music and therefore they are important in her designs.
For the last two years, Jule Cats has been living in houses that were on the list to be demolished. In this period she learned how it feels to be forced to leave your home. Cats’ was also moved by the situation of the original inhabitants living around her. Every week she saw families leaving their beloved homes and history behind, dealing with a situation they did not ask for.
Through conversations with inhabitants, housing agencies and architects, she came to know more about the different thoughts and emotions connected to demolition. This research proved that barely anyone is willing to leave his or her home. People dealing with this situation feel angry, sad and unwanted. The Dutch government mostly rebuilds districts to attract different inhabitants than the original ones. After the demolition the original inhabitants cannot return to their familiar district. They feel like their feelings and situation are being ignored.
With her project ‘In Disguise’ Jule Cats reveals this theme that lies beneath the surface. Her project translates the feelings and emotions of inhabitants dealing with forced migration within Dutch cities.
The foundation of all the material- and design-choices is a song written by Jule Cats herself. This song outlines the emotions of these inhabitants. By doing this, she tries to confront people who are not familiar with this theme.
